John Wesley Steere (1824-1900) was an apprentice and employee of William Allen Johnson. In 1867, he and George William Turner started their eponymous independent company in Westfield, Massachusetts. The firm suffered significant losses from fire and flood. The firm was renamed as J. W. Steere & Sons in 1897.
